Welcome to The Download Zone!
If this is your first time here, you might want to read this introduction before hitting the software library.

The Download Zone is an experimental area of Heidsite from which you can download free and shareware fonts, utilities, sounds, and more.

The contents of The Download Zone are a small sampling of the 600MB of software that you'll find on my "Macworld Power User Clinic" CD-ROM, which is included with my 1200-page "Macworld New Complete Mac Handbook." If you don't want to drum your fingers waiting for downloads, might I humbly suggest that you sprint to your local book store and pick up a copy. Besides the software, the CD-ROM also contains an interactive companion to the book, with more than 40 minutes of original QuickTime interviews and tutorials, hundreds of searchable reviews from Macworld magazine, and text excerpts from the book.
What's the Experiment?
Why is The Download Zone experimental? Because of the software I'm using to implement it: Apple's NetFinder, a great new program from Apple's Cybertech group.

NetFinder is currently in beta testing, and it can get a bit funky. If you see a dialog box asking for a user name and password, just click Cancel and then click No. This seems to be a bug relating to application icons.

If you have other problems opening a folder or downloading an item, let me know and I'll pass the information along to the folks who created this great addition to the Mac Web-publishing arsenal.
How to Use It
You'll love NetFinder -- it works a lot like the Finder's standard directory window. You can even read the "Read Me" files by simply clicking on them -- no need to download them first.

To download a file, simply click it. The files are downloaded in standard Binhex (HQX) format.

Important: If you're downloading fonts from the font library, be sure to download all of the files in a given folder. This is especially important for PostScript Type 1 fonts -- I've noticed some people have downloaded only the screen font, while the Type 1 format also requires a corresponding printer font.
Please Read This
Many of the items here are shareware. If you use them, please pay the author's requested fee. Help keep the shareware system alive!

Be sure to come back often. I'll be adding much more as time progresses -- and as NetFinder settles down!
